Tobacco Stains is a true story of the life of a courageous woman, Dora, and the struggles she faced over the years. She was born in Roxboro, North Carolina, in 1921 to a family of poor sharecroppers who later, in spite of racial discrimination combined with extreme poverty, were able to own their land and become self-sufficient. All this, only for Dora to later marry a man and discover he had lied to her about his family s financial status. He was just another poor sharecropper! Their first few years of marriage seemed like marital bliss, but by the time her third child was born, Dora s life became a living hell. The physical, emotional, and mental abuse Dora and her children endured became increasingly brutal over the years. Finally the abuse resulted in the death of her children s father.
